Russia: FSB officer charged with treason denies involvement with hacker group

Russian Federation, Moscow
February 1, 2017 at 16:16 GMT -00:00 · Published

Ivan Pavlov, the lawyer representing one of the Federal Security Service (FSB) officers charged with treason said that his client denies any links to the hacker group 'Shaltai-Boltai' (Humpty Dumpty), in Moscow on Wednesday.

According to Pavlov "a criminal case was opened" by the FSB concerning "several persons" charged with treason against Russia. However the lawyer rejected claims the case was "connected with the Shaltai-Boltai" hacking group, saying that it was not supported by the documents he has seen. Pavlov did not disclose who he is representing, stating only that his client "does not acknowledge his guilt."

Two senior FSB officers and a high-level manager of top Russian cyber-security company Kaspersky Lab are facing charges of treason and are accused of working in the interests of the US.

Shaltai-Boltai is a Russian hacking group known for publishing the correspondence of Russian officials. The hacking group has targetted Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov, Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich, and leading presidential aide Vladislav Surkov, among others in the past. The group also once announced that Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev was resigning in order to take up photography.
