Germany: Greenpeace activists mask Berlin's Victory Column in pollution demo

Greenpeace activists scaled Berlin's Victory Column to dress the golden Statue of Victoria in a gas mask, as part of a protest over poor air quality, footage on Tuesday shows.

Greenpeace activists held anti-pollution signs and protested beneath the statue to draw attention to the problem of poor air pollution in the country. The group says that if safe limits are not met, they will call for driving bans.

This is not the first time Greenpeace has targeted iconic statues to raise awareness over air pollution. The stunt was carried out before in Berlin October 2009, and was replicated again in London in April 2016, when Greenpeace activists scampered up monuments across the city including Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square.

Data published by the Umweltbundesamt (UBA) showed that multiple German cities exceeded the EU limit for nitrogen oxide levels in 2016. Nitric oxide is an airborne pollutant which comes from diesel engines. High levels of the toxic pollutant are known to lead to increased likelihoods of asthma cases and cardiovascular diseases.

According to the Environmental Agency, Germany has over 10,000 premature deaths per year as a result of toxic air pollution.
