Russia: Moscow ready to discuss 'safe zones' in Syria with US - Lavrov

Russian Federation, Moscow

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Russian authorities were ready to discuss potential 'safe zones' in Syria with US colleagues, while speaking at a joint press conference with his Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh Mohammed, in Moscow, Monday.

Lavrov said, "This issue differs from those already discussed in the previous stages of the Syrian crisis, in particular from those ideas which stipulated formation of an alternative Syrian government and its use as a basis for overthrowing the regime power."

Both diplomats stressed that Russia and Eritrea "share a common approach to the situation in the Middle East and North Africa region, including Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, in regard to joint fight against international terrorism."

Economic ties and investment, as well as cooperation in agriculture and education between the two countries topped the foreign ministers' agenda for the meeting.
