Spain: Around 1,000 far-right activists protest Catalan independence

Spain, Madrid
January 28, 2017 at 15:28 GMT -00:00 · Published

Around 1,000 supporters of Spain's extreme-right Falange party marched through Madrid on Saturday, in protest against the Catalan independence movement. Protesters waved Francoist flags and chanted pro-unity slogans.

The demonstrators also demanded freedom for the 14 far-right extremists who were imprisoned after they attacked the Blanquerna Cultural Centre on September 11, 2013, during Catalan National Day festivities.

Several people were injured, including a Catalonian politician from the Democratic Union of Catalonia, Josep Sanchez Llibre. The Supreme Court had considered the attack against the Blanquerna "ideological discrimination."

On Tuesday, High representatives of Catalonia, including its President Carles Puigdemont, defended Catalonia's right to hold an independence referendum at 'The Catalan Referendum' meeting, held in the European Parliament in Brussels.

The independence referendum is scheduled to take place in September 2017, despite strong opposition from the central Spanish government.
