Chile: Death toll rises to 11 as wildfire continues to rip through central Chile

Chile, Llico

What have been described as the worst wildfires to hit Chile in over five decades continued to spread through central Chile, Friday, as emergency services attempt to quell the blazes that have already killed 11 people to date.

Fires could still be seen ripping through forested areas nearby the coastal resort of Llico in Maule region. Firefighters were on site in San Fabian in the Bio Bio region battling similar blazes, with aid being given to animals hurt by the wildfire.

Mexico, Peru, France and the United States have all offered firefighting assistance. More than 85 separate fires had been recorded in central Chile, with the flames spreading over a reported 190,000 hectares (469,500 acres).

With the assistance of dozens of aircrafts, many of the areas worst hit have brought under control over the last few days. While wildfires are not uncommon in the area, this summer is considered to be particularly bad due to a long drought, hot temperatures and strong winds.
