Germany: Teenage girl convicted of attempted murder of police officer for IS
The Higher Regional Court in Celle convicted Safia S to six years in jail, in Celle, on Thursday. The defendant is accused of attempted murder of a police officer in Hanover on behalf of the Islamic State.
“The senate took it as proven that the defendant - in her actions in Hannover Main Station - wanted not only to injure the federal police officer but rather to kill him, in support of the Islamic State,” said Jessica Lass, a spokesperson of the court, adding that chats on Safia’s mobile phone indicated she was in contact with the militant group.
Safia’s lawyer stated that he will not accept the verdict, announcing he will appeal the decision, while blaming the authorities. “The actual failure is being neglected here. The police of Hanover, of Lower Saxony, actually failed, alongside with the prosecutor’s office in Hanover. This crime could have been prevented.”
Safia S, a German national of Moroccan heritage, is accused of stabbing a 34 year-old police officer at Hanover’s main train station in February 2016, allegedly on behalf of the Islamic State group. As Safia S. was 15 years old at the time the attack took place, she was tried under the law code for juveniles.
