USA: Trump signs order relaunching Dakota Access Pipeline work - press sec

United States, Washington DC
January 24, 2017 at 21:24 GMT +00:00 · Published

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer announced that US President Donald Trump had signed a memorandum regarding the removal of barriers to work on the Dakota Access Pipeline, which was suspended by the Obama administration following protests by environmentalists and Native Americans. Spicer was speaking at a press conference in Washington DC, Tuesday.

Spicer stated that the "memorandum directs agencies to expedite reviews and approvals for the remaining portions of this pipeline, which the previous administration held up for political reasons." He said Trump would negotiate "the best deal" for the country over the project.

The spokesperson underlined that Trump was willing "to sit down with all the individuals that are involved in the Dakota Pipeline to make sure that it is a deal that benefits all of the parties of interest."

Since it was approved in late July, the 1,886-kilometre (1,172 miles) pipeline has sparked outrage among Native American communities, North Dakota locals, many US citizens, and people around the world.

The project is expected to carry crude oil from the North Dakota region, north of a local tribe's lands, to southern Illinois when it is completed by the end of the year. Thousands of Native Americans representing tribes from all over the country have travelled to North Dakota to camp in solidarity with Standing Rock Sioux.
