United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, praised the trilateral Russia-Turkey-Iran meeting on the mechanisms for securing a long-lasting Syrian ceasefire, during an exclusive interview with RT in Astana on Tuesday, saying it was substantive due to all three parties' ability to "make a difference."

De Mistura said "the reason why this was, in my opinion, a productive meeting, is that we had three delegations: we had the Russian Federation - very active, very active,- and the Iranian delegation and the Turkish delegation. And all three of them do make a difference, because when we talk about a ceasefire, they can have an influence. That's why this meeting was substantive."

Furthermore, the UN Special Envoy for Syria said the meeting had managed to achieve three things. Firstly, bringing together previously conflicted parties "in one room and in one hotel and for two days." Secondly, the parties had managed to decide on a "deliverable" mechanism that would ensure "this ceasefire will not be like the previous ones that started breaking down after a while." And thirdly, it helped "enormously the mood but also the atmosphere for a political discussion" around the upcoming UN-led Syria talks in Geneva next month.

"We are quite impressed by the fact that this was possible and we intend in Geneva, through the UN, to build on this," de Mistura said of the talks.

The International Meeting on the Syrian Settlement, which kicked off in the Kazakh capital on Monday, focused on consolidating a ceasefire that has been in place since December 30, 2016.

The negotiations were brokered by Russia, Turkey and Iran, whose representatives reportedly met with delegates from both the Syrian government and opposition parties ahead of the talks.
