Brazil: Students protest proposed closure of Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ)
Hundreds of students, faculty staff and workers hit the streets of Rio de Janeiro, Wednesday, to march against the possible closing of the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) on Wednesday.
One student protester, Leonardo Guimares, said that education is in danger, stating "The professors, they are not receiving their money, students can't afford university, can't afford transportation," adding that "we are here to save UERJ. We are here to defend public education."
The closure of the UERJ comes after a financial crisis hit Brazil and particularly the state of Rio de Janeiro, where salaries of public workers have been frozen and many budget cuts have taken place across state departments. Education and public health are two fields that have been most severely affected by the financial crisis.
