
Iran: Syrian PM Khamis meets Rouhani in Tehran ahead of Astana peace talks
Syrian Prime Minister Imad Khamis met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran, Wednesday, ahead of the forthcoming Syria peace talks that are due to take place in Kazakhstani capital of Astana on January 23. In addition to Russia and Turkey, Iran will be mediating the talks.
Rouhani reportedly lauded Syria's recent accomplishments, stressing that the liberation of Aleppo and the establishment of ceasefire were critical steps towards the restoration of peace in Syria.
In turn, Khamis allegedly thanked Iran for its role in reaching stability in Syria and emphasised the need for deepening ties between the two countries.
The Syrian prime minister landed in Tehran on Monday for a series of meetings with senior Iranian officials. On Tuesday, Khamis met with Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani, where they discussed the latest developments in Syria and the region, as well as the development of bilateral relations between Tehran and Damascus.
