Russia: Moldovan leader states support for EU agreement repeal, alongside Putin

Russian Federation, Moscow

Recently elected Moldovan President Igor Dodon announced that he would support the invalidation of the Association Agreement with the EU, while speaking at a press conference alongside Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday.

"I spoke repeatedly against the signing of this [EU Association] agreement because I believe that Moldova did not get any advantages out of this. We lost the Russian market, and oddly enough the volume of exports to the European market also fell," stated Dodon, who added "I do not exclude that after the next parliamentary elections that a proposition will appear which I will support. A proposition of the parliamentary majority. There is a party of socialists, I hope they will get a majority and then this agreement will be repealed."

Dodon spoke on his visit to the breakaway region of Transnistria, saying "For the first time in nine years I went on a visit to the Left Bank, to Transnistria, and at the beginning of this year, at the beginning of 2017, for the first time in nine years, a meeting was held at the level of heads of the Right and Left Banks."

In turn, Putin praised Dodon for visiting Transnistria, saying the trip was a "demonstration of the desire to restore not only the relationship, but also the territorial integrity of the country." Furthermore, Putin said it showed respect for the people who live in Transnistria. "I think this will create the conditions for meaningful negotiations on the Transnistrian settlement."
