Germany: Man who 'rejects modern German state' on trial for keeping WWII arsenal
An alleged member of the far-right Reichsburger movement or "Citizens of the German Reich" went on trial in the German town of Hanau, Tuesday, charged with the unauthorised possession of firearms.
Among the recovered weapons were a Kalashnikov-type rifle, two pistols, ammunition and a cannon, part of an aircraft belonging to the former German army.
According to investigating authorities, the 57-year old defendant is accused of possessing arms and decommissioned war weapons without obtaining the necessary permission.
The weapons were reportedly found in his flat in July 2015 in Main-Kinzig-Kreis, east of Hesse. The defendant has reportedly argued that the weapons did not belong to him but were part of the historical collection which belonged to his father.
The term Reichsburger is an umbrella label for a number of groups which reject the German state and maintain the legitimacy of the German Reich or Empire.
