USA: Charleston court confirms Dylann Roof's death sentence

Dylann Roof has been sentenced to death for killing nine people at South's oldest African-American church during a Bible study in Charleston, South Carolina. Federal jury announced their decision at the Charleston court on Wednesday, after about three hours of deliberations.

On June 17, 2015, Roof sat through one hour of a Bible study class at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, before shooting nine churchgoers in a racist attack.

Roof faced 33 federal charges including nine counts of violating the Hate Crime Act resulting in death and three counts of violating the Hate Crime Act involving an attempt to kill, among others. Roof is the first person to face execution for a federal hate crime conviction.
