He has still nine days left in office; hopefully he still has some conscience, maybe just a bit of dignity for that people-killer. Hopefully he [will do] it and he pull Oscar Lopez out of prison.”

Lopez.”

Protesters gathered in front of the Federal Court in San Juan to demand the release of Puerto Rican nationalist Oscar Lopez Rivera, Wednesday.

Demonstrators belonging to various socialist and Puerto Rican nationalist organisations were seen chanting and holding banners and placards urging outgoing-US President Barack Obama to release their fellow countryman.

“Sadly a lot of people put their trust in him [Barack Obama], and many Puerto Ricans thought that he was going to release Oscar," said Jose Escoda.

The Federal Court was forced to deploy a group of police officers at the entrance to the building for security reasons, with some protesters being reportedly arrested.

Oscar Lopez, a Puerto Rican revolutionary, is beginning his 35th year in a US prison. He was a key figure in the Puerto Rican independence movement of the 1970s, working as a community organiser and campaigner for social equality. Among other charges he was convicted of 'seditious conspiracy' in the US in 1981 for his role in the Armed Forces of National Liberation (FARN). He faces 55 years in jail - a term due to expire in 2027, when Lopez Rivera will be 84 years old. FARN sought to turn Puerto Rico into an independent communist state.

Puerto Rico, known officially as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is a territory of the United States and has been since 1898 when Spain ceded the island to the US under the Treaty of Paris following the conclusion of the Spanish-American War.
