Germany: Annual asylum seeker levels dropped by 600,000 in 2016 - de Maiziere

Around 280,000 asylum seekers arrived in Germany in 2016, less than one third of the number that arrived in 2015, informed German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere during a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday.

"In 2015 we had a number of 890,000 people who came to us... The respective number for the year of 2016 that just ended is 280,000 asylum seekers," de Maiziere said, before adding that "these numbers include the high amount of people arriving in the first three months of the year."

He continued, "after the first three months both the EU-Turkey deal came into effect and the Balkan route was closed. If you extrapolated from the numbers we have had since for the entire year, we would have stayed well below 280,000 with a number of around 200,000. German minister stressed that these numbers "show that the measures taken by the German government and the European Union take hold, resulting in a significant reduction in numbers."
