German Chancellor Angela Merkel has encouraged Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere to "publicly propose improvements of internal security", deputy government spokesperson Georg Streiter stated in Berlin on Wednesday.

Commenting on an article written by Thomas de Maiziere that was published in the German newspaper 'Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung' the day before, press spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Affairs Tobias Plate stressed that the piece is a concept paper which will start a debate about the internal security of Germany and Europe. He pointed out that the standard needs to comply with the Geneva Refugee Convention and the European Human Rights Convention.

His colleague from the Ministry of Defence Colonel Boris Nannt welcomed the debate, adding that he believes these political discussions are necessary for the best possible protection of the nation.

In the article, De Maiziere suggests a complete overhaul of the German security system. None of the spokespeople could give a time frame for the implementation of the proposals.
