USA: 2 arrested after climbling stadium during NFL match in anti-DAPL protest

United States, Minneapolis

Two protesters were arrested after climbing and unfurling a large anti-Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) banner from the rafters high above the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Sunday, during an American Football game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears.

The pair climbed high up to the rafters and dangled above the stadium next to a large banner reading "US Bank Divest, #No DAPL" for some time to bring attention to their protest before climbing back down and surrendering themselves to police officers waiting below to detain them.

Minneapolis-based US Bank, which is owned by parent company US Bancorp, owns the naming rights to the stadium since 2015, and is reportedly a major investor in the controversial Dakota Pipeline project.

Local news reports released a statement by the climbing protesters, "We are here in solidarity with water protectors from Standing Rock to urge US Bank to divest from the Dakota Access Pipeline."

Since it was approved in late July, the 1,886-kilometre (1,172 miles) pipeline has sparked outrage among Native American communities, North Dakota locals, US citizens, and environmentalists around the world. The project is expected to carry crude oil from the North Dakota region, north of the tribe's lands, to southern Illinois when it's completed by the end of the year. Thousands of Native Americans representing tribes from all over the country have traveled to North Dakota to camp in solidarity with Standing Rock Sioux.
