
UN: Security Council backs Russian-drafted resolution on Syrian ceasefire
The UN Security Council unanimously voted through a resolution drafted by Russia that pushes for a nationwide Syrian ceasefire, from UNHQ in New York City, Saturday.
United States Deputy Representative to the United Nations Michele J. Sison said that the goals of the resolution are "laudable" and that the United Nations Security Council welcomes "all efforts to end the violence in Syria" and "strongly support a nationwide ceasefire accompanied by unfettered humanitarian access to all the seized areas".
On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Syrian government and armed opposition groups had reached an agreement on a nationwide ceasefire in Syria which began on midnight on Friday in a deal brokered by Russia and Turkey. The agreement includes a fresh round of peace talks that will take place in Astana in Kazakhstan, January.
