Germany: Authorities release man arrested in connection with Berlin truck attack

A 40-year-old Tunisian man, suspected of having had contact with Anis Amri shortly before the attack at a Berlin Christmas market, has been released, federal prosecution spokesperson Frauke Koehler announced at a press conference in Karlsruhe on Thursday.

Investigations revealed that the suspect was “not the potential contact person for Anis Amri” and was therefore released, Koehler stated. Furthermore the federal prosecution spokesperson confirmed that authorities consider the video claiming responsibility for the attack to be authentic.

Koehler added the lorry driving into the crowd slowed down “due to an automatic braking system, which had already been installed”. She explained that according to the initial autopsy report the Polish driver did not suffer any stabbing wounds, but asked for patience, as final results and more details should be available in January.

On December 19, a lorry drove into a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people. Authorities believe Amri was behind the wheel, saying his identification documents were found in the abandoned vehicle. The so-called Islamic State (IS/ISIL) has released a video claiming responsibility for the attack.
