USA: Japan-US alliance 'has never been stronger' - Obama at Pearl Harbor memorial
US President Barack Obama stated that the alliance between US and Japan "has never been stronger," while delivering speech during his visit at Pearl Harbor on Tuesday. Obama, accompanied by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, visited Hawaii to pay tribute to the victims of Japan's 1941 bombing at the US Navy port, which killed more than 2,400 Americans and drew them into World War II.
Obama said: "Today, the alliance between the United States and Japan, bound not only by shared interests but also rooted in common values, stands as the cornerstone of peace and stability in the Asian-Pacific and a force for progress around the globe."
He continued, "the characters of nations are tested in war but it is defined in peace. After one of the most terrific chapters in human history... the United States and Japan chose friendship and they chose peace. Over the decades, our alliance has made both our nations more successful."
Earlier on Tuesday, Obama and Abe participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the USS Arizona Memorial at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.
