Russia's Emergencies Ministry [EMERCOM] rushed to the site of the crash of the Russian military Tu-154 aircraft carrying the official army choir of the Russian armed forces. Footage shows EMERCOM boats and a body stretchered near the wreckage in the Khosta Microdistrict, between Sochi and Adler, on Sunday.

A military investigation into the crash has been launched, Spokesperson for the Russian Investigative Committte, Svetlana Petrenko, said that interrogations into the technical personnel who prepared the plane were taking place, and that the pre-flight documents had been seized.

The Tu-154 aircraft was bound for Hmeimim airbase, in Syria's Latakia province, where the musicians on board were due to take part in a New Year’s performance. The plane crashed just 20 minutes after take-off.

The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that debris has been found in the Black Sea, 1.5 kilometres (0.9 miles) from the shoreline, at a depth of 50-70 meters (164-229 ft); the Defence Ministry also reported that the first body was found 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) away from Sochi's coast.

Having taken off from Sochi’s Adler airport at 05:25 local time (02:25 GMT), the plane, which was carrying service personnel, journalists and 64 members of the Alexandrov Ensemble military band, lost contact over the Russian part of the Black Sea two minutes after take-off.

According to reports, the aircraft was carrying some 84 passengers and eight crew members.
