Germany: Thousands rally in solidarity with refugees following Christmas market attack

Germany, Munich
December 23, 2016 at 03:11 GMT -00:00 · Published

Several thousand rallied in the Max-Joseph Platz in central Munich, Thursday, to honour the victims of the attack on a Berlin Christmas market and show solidarity with refugees who have come under a condemnation following the incident.

Addressing the crowds, member of Muslim Council in Munich Hajer Dhahri claimed that Germany is now in "a decisive moment."

The rally was organised by the activist group 'Bellevue di Monaco' under the slogan "Populists, fear-mongers and agitators have often pushed their xenophobic and post-truth theories in the past year - end it!." The group is renovating a number of refugee shelters in Munich and is engaged in a string of projects dedicated to assisting asylum-seekers in the Bavarian city. A number of social associations and human rights organisations joined the protest.

During the rally, the protesters denounced the recent surge of racist and xenophobic sentiments towards refugees in the country and called on German residents to eliminate the scapegoat mentality, all the while holding placards reading "Munich is colourful," "Welcome refugees" and "Education instead of fear."

The attack on a Christmas market near Berlin's busy Kurfuerstendamm shopping street took place on Monday evening, claiming the lives of 12 and injuring 50 more. On Wednesday, German authorities issued a wanted notice for Anis Amri, a 24-year-old Tunisian asylum seeker, who they claim is linked to the incident, as his identification papers were reportedly found in the abandoned lorry that was used in the attack.
