German Chancellery spokesperson Steffen Seibert announced that the German government approved a draft law aimed at strengthening security in public places, speaking during a press conference in Berlin on Thursday.

"Today the Cabinet has approved a bill regarding changes of the Federal Data Protection Act aimed at improving video surveillance in public places and therefore strengthening security in Germany," he said, before adding that "protection of life, health freedom of people must be of an important interest when surveillance by private parties takes place in public places."

Seibert also confirmed that German government has agreed on issuing body cameras as well as automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems for police officers.

The move came after a lorry crashed into the Breitscheidplatz Christmas market, near Berlin's busy Kurfuerstendamm Boulevard, on Monday evening at around 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT), killing 12 people and injuring 48.

Police are now reportedly searching for a Tunisian man whose ID was found beneath the driver's seat of the truck, according to media reports.
