Syria: Evacuation continues in last militant-held district in east Aleppo

Syrian Arab Republic, Aleppo
December 19, 2016 at 10:26 GMT -00:00 · Published

Scores of buses passed through the Salahdeen crossing point in Aleppo, Monday, to head towards the militant-held enclave in eastern Aleppo to evacuate civilians and militants from the area.

The evacuation of thousands of civilians and militants through the Salahdeen corridor came to a halt on Thursday, after reports of gunshots in the area. Military officials also claim that militants breached the terms of the evacuation by attempting to leave with heavy weapons as well as some hostages.

An agreement was reached in the early hours of Sunday morning, stating that 1,200 civilians and fighters would be bussed out from east Aleppo. Evacuations are also due to take place from Fua and Kefraya, two towns in Idlib province, that have been under militant siege for several years.

According to the World Health Organization's (WHO) representative in Syria, the evacuation is set to resume at around 14:00 local time (12:00 GMT), and will be under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) as well as the Syrian Arab Red Cross, Syrian state news agency SANA reports.
