Russia: Maidan opposition were 'supported and guided by Western patrons' - Azarov

Russian Federation, Moscow
December 16, 2016 at 15:24 GMT -00:00 · Published

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov claimed that Maidan opposition leaders were supported by "Western patrons," while speaking after a court hearing in Moscow, Friday, on the recognition of a series of violent events in Ukraine in 2014 as a coup.

"A so-called opposition leader [acted] so brazenly and offhandedly… [Would they have acted so] if they didn't know that all their actions would be supported by their Western patrons? Of course, their actions were supported and moreover guided [by Western countries]," Azarov said, following the hearing at Moscow's Dorogomilovsky Court.

He went on to say that Victoria Nuland, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, was too concerned about the future government in Ukraine. Azarov recalled their meeting where Nuland allegedly began "persuading [him] that it was necessary to create a national unity government."

"Why do you actually care so much which government will be working in Ukraine," Azarov asked Nuland before adding: "I'm not telling you what kind of government you should have. Why are you dictating us?"

The lawsuit has been filed by former Deputy of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada Vladimir Oleynik who demands to judicially declare events in Ukraine as a coup which will automatically lead to recognition of the current government of Ukraine as illegitimate.
