Russian President Vladimir Putin said he and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have discussed the possibility of peace treaty during the second day of his visit to Japan, in Tokyo, on Friday.

In regards to business and economic relations between Moscow and Tokyo, Russian President expressed the opinion that joint work in the field of economy will help to create a basis for improvement of truly partner relations between our countries.

Putin was speaking alongside Abe, who in turn stated he had offered Putin a "plan of cooperation which consists of eight directions, beneficial for the economy and improvement of life of our people." Continuing, Abe noted that the "cooperation plan which consists of eight directions is based on business relations which are built thanks to efforts of the colleagues from our countries."

Economic cooperation in fields including technology and energy, as well as the disputed Southern Kuril Islands are on the agenda of Putin's visit. While Moscow insists on following the Soviet-Japanese Joint Declaration of 1956 that legislated for the handing over the Habomai and Shikotan Islands to Japan, Tokyo asks for two additional islands to be handed over, Iturup and Kunashi.
