Uruguay: Venezuelan FM in Montevideo to discuss Mercosur suspension

Uruguay, Montevideo
December 16, 2016 at 01:53 GMT -00:00 · Published

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez gave a press conference from Mercosur headquarters in Montevideo, a day after being blocked from a meeting held by the South American economic bloc in Buenos Aires. Rodriguez was physically stopped from entering the meeting in the Argentinian capital on Wednesday after Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay attempted to suspend Venezuela from the alliance.

During the press conference, Rodriguez stated that Venezuela “doesn't need an invitation when it comes to Mercosur. Venezuela has been, is, and will always be Mercosur."

She added that “a coup is in fact in progress in Mercosur, where all legality is being violated," criticising the undemocratic method in which the so-called 'Triple Alliance' blocked Venezuela 's participation.

Before Rodriquez spoke to press, she took part in a meeting of the Commission of National Coordinators to discuss the issue.

Despite protests from Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, Rodriquez attempted to enter the Argentinian Foreign Ministry with her Bolivian counterpart David Choquehuanca on Wednesday, and was summarily expelled. The two foreign ministers' intervention reportedly brought the meeting to an abrupt end.

Choquehuanca reportedly severely injured his finger during a scuffle between Rodriquez and an Argentinian police officer.

Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, three of the four founding members of Mercosur, have recently been taken over by right-wing governments, attempting to suspend Venezuela from the group’s meetings, claiming that membership in the group extends only to countries with “fully functioning democratic institutions.”
