USA: DAPL protesters target Citibank funding for pipeline in NYC

United States, New York City
December 15, 2016 at 13:09 GMT +00:00 · Published

Scores of protesters rallied outside the Citigroup Corporate Offices in New York City, Thursday, to protest against Citibank's funding of the North Dakota pipeline as nationwide demonstrations continue against its construction.

Earlier this week, protesters also rallied outside the Wells Fargo's offices to denounce the financial institution's backing of the pipeline construction.

One protester addressed the crowds, saying "you put your money in City Bank. You put your money in Wells Fargo. You put your money in TD Bank. You put your money in [JPMorgan] Chase [Bank]. And all of sudden, that money is in the hands of the bankers who are in this building right here, in front of us. And they do things with it. They don't even ask for your permission. They do things like fund oil pipelines."

Since it was approved in late July, the 1,886-kilometre (1,172 miles) pipeline has sparked outrage among Native American communities, North Dakota locals, US citizens, and environmentalists around the world.

The project is expected to carry crude oil from the North Dakota region, north of the tribe's lands, to southern Illinois when it's completed by the end of the year. Thousands of Native Americans representing tribes from all over the country have traveled to North Dakota to camp in solidarity with Standing Rock Sioux.
