Netherlands: Closing arguments made at Ratko Mladic's war crimes trial

Hague Tribunal prosecutors and Ratko Mladic's defence lawyers gave their closing remarks at his trial in the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, The Hague, on Thursday.

The prosecutor Alan Tieger stated, "Ratko Mladic is not charged with thinking that ethnic separation is the best solution in a bad situation. He is charged with using the VRS (Army of Republika Srpska) to achieve it through the commission of brutal crimes," adding, "Ambassador Heard did not order a subordinate to shell civilians areas in Sarajevo until its residents were driven out of its minds, Ratko Mladic did. Ambassador Owen did not order the use as hostages of hundreds of peace keepers, Ratko Mladic did. Ambassador Stoltenberg did not order and oversee an operation which 7000 men and boys were executed, Ratko Mladic did."

He stressed, "General Mladic is not on trial because he is a Serb, he is not on trial because he is a military officer, he is on trial because the evidence shows and proves beyond a reasonable doubt that he is guilty of crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide."

Mladic's lawyer Dejan Ivetic stated, "It took Mr Tieger one and a half hours to get just to the point of just stating that the prosecution had proven their case beyond reasonable doubt, but they haven't demonstrated that they have done so."

He also countered the accusation that Mladic had been as a key partner with the former President of Republika Srpska Radovan Karadzic stating, "There wasn't a good relationship between Karadzic and Mladic at times, so how could they be working together as key partners in a criminal endeavor when they don't share similar views and had various conflicts."

In 1995 the UN indicted Mladic for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide during the conflicts in the Balkans. Mladic faces charges on two counts of genocide, persecutions, exterminations, murder, deportation, inhumane acts, terror, unlawful attacks on civilians and the taking of hostages.

The verdict is expected in November 2017.
