USA: Cosby leaves court with judge yet to decide on testimonies of actor's accusers

United States, Norristown, Pennsylvania

Comedian and actor Bill Cosby left Montgomery Courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, after his pre-trial hearing over sexual assault charges continued. Judge Steven O'Neill who is presiding over the case stated during the hearing that he would have to take some time before he decides whether Cosby's past accusers will be allowed to testify in court.

The statement comes after prosecutors asked the judge to allow 13 women who have accused Cosby of sexual assault to testify. Cosby's lawyers say accusations from the women about incidents that are not on trial will influence the case.

Brian McMonagle, Cosby's defense attorney stated that "In order for anybody in this country to get a fair trial the things that are happening here can't happen." "This man is presumed innocent, he is charged with one incident, that should be what we talk about in this case, nothing else," he added, calling the case "an absolute travesty of justice."

Defence attorney Gloria Allred in turn stated that "today there was a full scale attack by the defense on victims that is the prior bad act accusers, the 13 whom the prosecution is seeking to have testify."

In December 2015, Cosby was charged with drugging and molesting Andrea Constand in 2004. Since then, another 13 women have come forward claiming that Cosby also drugged and sexually assaulted them. Cosby denies all allegations and claims the sexual encounter with Constand was consensual. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a $25,000 (€23,494) fine.

The trial is set to begin in June 2017.
