France: Cazeneuve denounces alleged civilian casualties in east Aleppo following liberation

France, Paris
December 13, 2016 at 00:31 GMT +00:00 · Published

French Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve spoke in front of deputies at the National Assembly in Paris on Tuesday, denouncing the reports of civilians casualties in eastern Aleppo at the hands of pro-government forces, shortly following Aleppo's liberation.

Cazeneuve said "As I speak at the moment, ladies and gentlemen of the Assembly, an awful humanitarian tragedy is striking the streets of Aleppo and its civil population. The women and children of Aleppo, are struck by the bombardments and are disproportionately the victims of this atrocity."

Cazeneuve continued "These atrocities, that could be considered war crimes, or perhaps humanitarian crimes, are committed with a cynicism and with a cruelty that is unheard of. It is in the honour of France to be one of the only nations who opposed since the summer of 2013 the total war carried out by Bashar al-Assad against his own people. We will never accept, in the name of a purported realism, to ally ourselves today with those responsible for the martyrdom of Aleppo. They are the same who allowed for Daesh to retake Palmyra."

"Since the beginning of 2016, 420 people who are aligned to Islamism have been arrested, and 17 planned attacks have been foiled on our soil. Facing this threat, the council of ministers adopted, last Saturday, a draft bill to prolong the state of emergency, which we are presenting here today," ended Cazeneuve.

Syrian army retook control of the last militant-held areas in the eastern part of Aleppo on Monday evening, causing jubilation among residents in west Aleppo.
