Argentina: Thousands march for release of Milagro Sala on International Human Rights Day

Demonstrators are raising awareness of the 30,000 detainees that disappeared in a military coup in 1976

Milagru is president of the Tupac Amaru Neighbourhood Association, which is a part of the Association of State Workers

Thousands of protesters rallied for both the defence of their human rights and the immediate release of political prisoner Milagro Sala in the Plaza de Mayo on Sunday. The day of protest also falls on the anniversary of Mauricio Macri's Government, which demonstrators argue has worsened the social and political state of the country.

Protesters carried signs reading "They are 30,000", as they strived to draw attention to the thousands of detainees that disappeared in a military coup in 1976. They demanded the government hold to account those who committed crimes during the dictatorship through the continuance of State trials as well as the implementation of public policies that support human rights.

Demonstrators also waved white flags that were marked with the words "Buenos Aires, Tupac Amaru". Sala is a leader of the Tupac Amaru association, part of the Association of State Workers (ATE) of Jujuy, and a leading figure in the Movimiento Piquetero of Argentina. She was arrested on Saturday 16, 2016, after taking part in a protest against reforms to social funding introduced by Jujuy's local government. Many of Sala's supporters argue that her arrest was politically motivated after the Governor of Jujuy Gerardo Morales accused her of "incitement to commit crimes and public disturbance."
