Germany: Europe in 'permanent state of crisis' since Russia’s annexation of Crimea - Steinmeier

Germany, Hamburg
December 7, 2016 at 18:56 GMT -00:00 · Published

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated that Europe has been in a "permanent state of crisis" since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, speaking to the press ahead of 23rd OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in Hamburg's Atlantic Kempinski Hotel, Wednesday.

"The question of peace and war has returned to the European continent with the annexation of Crimea and the ongoing Ukrainian conflict which we haven't managed to resolve yet," he said, before stressing that it is vital for all European countries to "get together within the next days" and "talk face-to-face with each other, and where necessary, even to argue."

Steinmeier said that the OSCE meeting “gives a lot of opportunities to hold small-format meetings” on issues such as the Syrian conflict.

The German top diplomat also addressed his presidential candidacy, ruling out that he will use the OSCE Council as an opportunity to say goodbye to his colleagues as the presidential election has not yet been held.

"I oppose farewell speeches as we [Germany] are a democracy and in a democracy you are appointed to a new position through elections which have not taken place yet," he stated.
