South Korea: Seoul rallies continue as President Park's impeachment vote looms

Korea, Republic of, Seoul
December 7, 2016 at 13:13 GMT -00:00 · Published

Scores of protesters rallied outside the ruling-Saenuri Party headquarters in Seoul on Wednesday, demanding that the party's members vote to impeach South Korean President Park Guen-hye over corruption allegations.

The protesters held candles, listened to speeches and chanted anti-Park slogans, as they continued their daily protesting in the South Korean capital.

Park stated she would respond 'calmly' to the outcome of an impeachment motion, due to place in the National Assembly on Friday. The motion will require the approval of two-thirds of the 300-seat house. All opposition MPs must vote for impeachment, and be joined by at least 28 members from Park's Saenuri Party if the motion is to pass.

The impeachment vote comes after Park faces accusations of conspiring to extort tens of millions of dollars from South Korean businesses along with old friend Choi Soon-sil. Park is accused of granting her friend, undue influence over her presidential decisions, which allegedly allowed Choi to solicit business donations for her own non-profit fund. Choi was arrested over the allegations on November 3.
