Cuba: Thousands line streets as Castro’s ashes begin journey across country

Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro's ashes began a 550-mile (900 kilometre) journey from Havana to Santiago de Cuba, on Wednesday. Soldiers carried the casket, holding the remains of the 90-year-old leader, out of Cuba's Defense Ministry around 07:00 local time (12:00 GMT), and placed them on the back of a military vehicle.

The procession route follows the path in reverse of the victory tour Castro and his allies made after ousting the authoritarian government of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista in 1959.

Castro passed away at the age of 90 in Havana on Friday, prompting emotional responses from both supporters and detractors worldwide. His ashes will be interred in the Santiago de Cuba at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery on December 4.

He served as prime minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976, and then as president from 1976 to 2008, in which time he survived geopolitical tensions and scores of US assassination attempts. In 2008 he handed the reins of power to his younger brother Raul Castro and slowly withdrew from the front-line of Cuban politics.
