Cuba: Russian Duma Speaker Volodin praises Fidel Castro as 'a friend of Russia'

Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin paid his respects to former Cuban leader Fidel Castro at the memorial on Havana's Revolution Square, Tuesday.

Volodin placed flowers at the memorial and wrote that Castro "was a friend of Russia and his name was a symbol of an epoch," in the condolence book.

The Russian delegation is expected to attend a mass gathering in Revolution Square on Tuesday evening.

Fidel Castro passed away at the age of 90 in Havana on Friday, prompting emotional responses from both supporters and detractors worldwide. His ashes will be interred in the Santiago de Cuba at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery on December 4.

Castro was a key member of the Cuban Revolution. He and his allies ousted the authoritarian government of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista in 1959, before going on to found a Cuban socialist state.

Castro served as prime minister from 1959 to 1976, and then as president from 1976 to 2008, in which time he survived geopolitical tensions and scores of US assassination attempts. In 2008 he handed the reins of power to his younger brother Raul and slowly withdrew from the front-line of Cuban politics.
