Cuba: Thousands flock to pay tribute to Castro at Jose Marti memorial

Cuba, Havana
November 28, 2016 at 23:01 GMT -00:00 · Published

Thousands of Cubans flocked to Revolution Square, Havana, on Monday to pay tribute to their late-leader Fidel Castro. The revolutionary leader had a tribute containing flowers and pictures of him during the Cuban Revolution erected at the Jose Marti memorial.

A picture of Castro when he was in the guerrilla struggle in the late 50s was on display at the memorial, as well as medals that were awarded to the leader during his lifetime.

Castro often addressed crowds from Revolution Square; a tour of his remains is set to begin there and will continue on a journey across the country before being interred in Santiago de Cuba at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery on December 4.

Castro passed away at the age of 90 in Havana on Friday, prompting emotional responses from both supporters and detractors worldwide.

A key member of the Cuban Revolution, Castro and his allies ousted the authoritarian government of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista in 1959, before going on to found a Cuban socialist state.

He served as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976, and then as president from 1976 to 2008, surviving a turbulent century, geopolitical tensions and scores of US assassination attempts. In 2008 he handed the reins of power to his younger brother Raul and slowly withdrew from the front-line of Cuban politics.
