Russia: Yanukovych approves of potential Poroshenko sit down

Viktor Yanukovych, Former Ukrainian President (Ukrainian): "Relatively speaking, I would like to meet in this format as we had negotiations before. With them, and with those who sat next to me that time. That we also asked each other questions and looked each other in the eyes. It would be right, if it is possible to do so."

Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych accepted the possibility of a simultaneous examination with the current Ukraine administration leaders, speaking to a Kiev court via video link from Rostov-on-Don, Monday.

Responding to a question from the court on whether he would meet with current Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and the country's former Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Yanukovych stated, "I would like to meet in this format as we had negotiations before. With them, and with those who sat next to me that time. That we also asked each other questions and looked each other in the eyes."

Addressing the repercussion of the Maidan protests, Yanukovych said, "You can answer very briefly that it was beneficial to the Maidan leaders, who then seized power in an unconstitutional way. This was disadvantageous for the President of Ukraine."

The former president also mentioned the Maidan victims and asked them for forgiveness, "I particularly want to appeal to the families of the victims and those who represent them in the hall now. I owe you an apology. I want you to understand and know that I did everything to avoid this tragedy."

The transmission of his statement was being received at Kiev's Svyatoshinski district court which was conducting a trial into shootings that occurred during the Maidan protests.

Due to protests five accused former members of the now-disbanded Ukrainian Berkut special police force were unable to be brought before the court. The former Berkut members charged are Pavel Abroskin, Sergey Zinchenko, Aleksandr Marinchenko, Sergey Tamtura, and Oleg Janishevskiy.

The trial is based on charges that the five men were involved in the deaths of protesters taking part in the mass demonstrations in and around the Ukrainian capital's Maidan square. Following the resulting unrest and violence, Yanukovych fled Ukraine in February 2014.
