Russia: Dubrovka Theatre siege suspect pleads not guilty on terrorism charges

SOT, Hasan Zakaev, defendant (Russian): "In total?"

Kudaskin: "Yes"

Zakaev: "No, I don't think so."

Kudashkin: "More than four thousand dollars?"

Zakaev: "By memory it’s near four thousand. Between three and four thousand."

Kudashkin: "Here we see."

A suspect in the 2002 Moscow Dubrovka Theatre siege, Hasan Zakayev, pleaded not guilty to terrorism charges, as Moscow Military Court questioned him in the Russian capital on Thursday. Zakaev was arrested in Moscow in December 2012 after more than 12 years on the run, and appeared before the court for the first time on Tuesday.

“I do not accept my guilt in participating in a criminal group nor in the preparation and attempt at terrorism,” he said. However, he admitted that “in the summer of 2001, I came to Moscow in a VAZ 21099” which carried “guns and ammunition, but I didn’t know that there also was bomb in the gas tank.”

Zakaev stated that “In that time people in Chechnya were just doing two things: selling cars or trading guns. In that situation, I didn’t care that I was carrying one pistol or ten.” He also admitted that for trafficking the weapons, he was paid “between three and four thousand” dollars.

On October 23, 2002, a group of 40 armed militants entered the Dubrovka Theatre in southern Moscow during a performance of the Nord-Ost musical. Around 900 people, including theatre workers, performers and audience members were taken hostage. The group claimed allegiance to the militant separatist movement in Chechnya and demanded the withdrawal of Russian forces from the region.

After almost three days, Russian Special Forces began an assault, filling the building with knock out gas. All the militants were killed during the raid, as well as 130 hostages, some of whom are believed to have died from inhaling the gas.
