France: RT compared to ISIS after EU drafts law against media 'propaganda'

Members of the committee responsible for drafting a resolution intended to counteract so-called anti-EU "propaganda" gave a press conference following its approval at European Parliament in Strasbourg, Wednesday.

During the conference, Romanian MEP and journalist for Radio Free Europe compared what he claimed to be "professional propaganda'" by the Russian state with ISIS. "They are unfortunately equally skilful when it is about anti-European, anti-Western, anti-Democratic propaganda", before adding that whistleblower Edward Snowden should also be included in the report.

Austrian MEP Eugen Freund, who serves on the EP's Subcommittee on Security and Defence, said that he disagrees that the two should be "mingled into one report", saying that there are "many other countries" making "propaganda", naming Turkey as a country which has "government controlled media that is spreading their messages [..] in all major Western cities in Western Europe."

The European Parliament (EP) voted to approve a draft resolution intended to counteract so-called anti-EU "propaganda" disseminated by third parties earlier in the day. Russian news channel RT was named as one such party.

The document, proposed by Polish EU lawmaker Anna Elzbieta Fotyga, also singles out self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) channels as a posing a particular threat. The resolution claims that these "hostile propaganda" channels seek to divide the EU and provoke fear and uncertainty among EU citizens.

304 EP members voted in favour of the resolution, 179 voted against and 209 abstained. The resolution proposes more investment in "strategic communications" including education, online and local media to improve information literacy among EU countries.
