Russia: 51 terminally ill people cryopreserved in Sergiev Posad facility

Scientists at the KrioRus centre presented their curious premises in Sergiev Posad in Moscow Region, Tuesday, where 51 terminally ill people have been recently frozen in special ice chambers in order to resurrect them after a cure for their diseases has been found. The procedure is called cryopreservation.

The KrioRus Company appeared on the Russian market eleven years ago and has already gained popularity as it is the first company outside the US to provide services of a full cycle of cryonic preservation both for people and animals. At the moment the company has more than 150 contracts for the cryopreservation of ill people or their relatives.

KrioRus scientific director Igor Artyukhov said that at first he and six of his associates "wanted to create the organisation for ourselves and our relatives" and "didn't plan to launch a large-scale commercial enterprise." Due to financial pressures, however, Artyukhov decided to take on other people.

Cryo preservation costs around $35,000(€32,932) and there are many people who want to undergo this procedure. Artyukhov explained the process: "After blood circulation stops, there are a few hours during which the human cells remain alive." He went on to explain that "if the head of a patient is cooled to 0 degrees Centigrade immediately then these processes slow down ten times and we can talk about tens of hours or even about a few days when some actions can be undertaken."

Cryo preservation is achieved with liquid nitrogen and with other special fluids. The bodies are kept frozen in containers reminiscent of huge thermoses. The procedure is reportedly becoming more and more popular around the world, but it is yet to be proven whether a person or an animal can be resurrected once frozen.
