France: MEPs denounce ‘insane’ report that gives parity to Russia and IS
A report by Polish MEP Anna Fotyga, on online propaganda allegedly disseminated by terrorist organisations and Russia sparked a passionate debate at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Tuesday, after MEPs lambasted the documents author.
Following from Fotyga, Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, took the opportunity to call for support for the “East-StratCom task force,” which is, according to Mogherini, “reaching out to a Russian speaking audience that want better access to information about the European Union in real-time, in Russia, and from a source they can trust."
Her views were not shared by all with Javier Couso Permuy MEP, from the European United Left bloc, stating "This report is insane. It fosters hysteria against Russia and neo-McCarthyism in Europe.” Permuy continued, explaining that to create an equivalence with “groups like Daesh, which disseminates live videos of torture and murders,” and a “member state of the Security Council [Russia]…is an insult to the intelligence of Europeans."
Permuy’s sentiments were echoed by UKIP’s James Carver MEP, who stated “this report is worryingly reminiscent of the cold war,” before warning the chamber “You have to stop your neo-colonialism and your justification for more European Union.”
Fotyga is a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, and has served in the successive cabinets of Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz and Jarosław Kaczynski.
