Russia: Archaeologists discover lead seals dating back from 1812

Russian archaeologists believe they found 196 lead seals dating back to Napoleon’s 1812 invasion of Russia. The find was made on the Sofiyskaya Embankment across the Moskva river from the Kremlin on Tuesday. Weighing a total of two kilograms ((4.4 lbs), the side of each seal depicts the coat of arms of the Russian Empire on one side, and different icons and abbreviated letterings on the other.

According to Leonid Kondrashev, Head Archaeologist Moscow at the Department of Cultural Heritage, the seals may have been collected to be shot. He said “during Napoleon’s occupation of Moscow lead as the material used to shoot was in shortage” so maybe it was “material for this purpose – we can’t exactly say but it’s the primary version”.

Konstantin Voronin, Director of the Capital Archaeological Bureau, said “the seals were made for excise, to mark goods or documents, to acknowledge that duty was paid on customs. The interesting thing is that they were collected in a small pouch”.

Once the archaeologists finish their research on the find it will be delivered to the Moscow State Museum. The archaeological dig on the Sofiyskaya Embankment began in June 2015 as part of the restoration of mansions and estates dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.
