Netherlands: Wilders may face possible €5,000 fine over hate speech

Netherlands, Schiphol
November 17, 2016 at 09:52 GMT +00:00 · Published

Public prosecutor Wouter Bos asked judges to convict Party for Freedom (PVV) leader Geert Wilders and fine him €5,000 ($5,365) for inciting hatred and discrimination against Moroccan immigrants, during a court hearing in Schiphol on Thursday.

"In our democratic society, freedom of speech is very important, but it cannot be misused at the expense of others," Bos said. "We ask the court to convict Wilders for inciting hatred and discrimination against a group and sentence him to pay five thousand euros," he added.

The public prosecutor went on to describe the case against Wilders which was based on a 2014 speech by the PVV leader. Bos said: "Wilders asked the audience to 'please give an honest answer' and then he asked rhetorical questions one after the other, questions on which his audience of PVV supporters could only have had one answer, the same one Wilders have expected - 'less.' And he did get this answer, twice, and then Wilders asked his third and last question: 'Do you want more or less Morrocans?' The crowd answered 'less' and Wilders powered it up by saying: 'Then we will arrange it.' This was a perfect interaction between Wilders and his audience."

Wilders has denied the charges against him and did not attend Thursday's hearing.
