USA: No political motivation behind Ulyukayev arrest – ex-Russian Finance Minister Kudrin

United States, New York City
November 16, 2016 at 17:10 GMT -00:00 · Published

Russia's former Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin dismissed any notion of their being a political motivation behind the arrest of former Economic Development Minister Alexei Ulyukayev, during an interview with RT, in New York, Tuesday. Kudrin was speaking at the Moscow Exchange Forum 2016, which is being hosted in New York City.

Kudrin spoke more broadly on Russia-USA relations following the recent presidential elections. The former Russian Minister of Finance said that the aftermath of Donald Trump’s victory an "improvement" of relations, which was evident ahead of the election, could be "accelerated.” He continued, noting that "both Russia and the USA need to fundamentally reduce international tensions, but it is possible only with joint steps.”

In relations to Russia’s economic outlook, Kudrin explained was that Russia was "not in isolation" and traded "with all countries, including the US.” He explained that "in the future we need to exchange technological, financial, educational areas more actively.”

Ulyukayev was arrested on Monday night by the officers from the Investigative Committee as he is suspected of accepting a bribe of $2 million (€1,863,559). According to investigators, he received the money after his ministry had approved the deal on Rosneft's takeover of the major regional oil company Bashneft. As a result, Rosneft could acquire the state's stake in Bashneft.
