Morocco: US must respect 'irreversible’ Paris agreement - Hollande

Morocco, Marrakesh
November 15, 2016 at 00:51 GMT +00:00 · Published

French President Francois Hollande berated the stated intentions of the President-elect of the US, Donald Trump, to repeal the Paris agreement, during a speech at the 22nd Conference of Parties to the United Nations on Climate Change (COP22), in Marrakesh on Tuesday.

Speaking to an audience which included Moroccan King Mohammed VI and UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon, Hollande said: "The agreement is historic, and what we have to say here is that this agreement is irreversible. It is irreversible by law." He added that the US, as the "largest economic power in the world and the second largest green-house emitter, must respect the commitments they have undertaken."

The President also iterated his willingness to cooperate with Trump, claiming that France would "lead this dialogue with United States and its new president in openness and with respect but with demands and determination on behalf of the 100 states that have already ratified the Paris Agreement."

The COP22 conference, which is set to last until November 18, will oversee the start of the implementation of the Paris Agreement, a convention aimed at reducing global-warming emissions. Some 180 countries, including China and the US, have signed the agreement, but many are yet to fully ratify the deal
