Firefighters removed a valuable altarpiece from a church badly damaged in the October 26 earthquake, in Camerino on Friday. Officials and experts assessed the artwork above the altar in San Filippo church, before firefighters were called in to lift the piece and carry it to a van. The altarpiece was then transported to an undisclosed location for safe storage.

The painting's rescue was overseen by representatives of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, and Archbishop Francesco Giovanni Brugnaro, as well as a curator and architect and a police protection unit. Also recovered was the icon of Santa Maria.

Painted by Giambattista Tiepolo, the altarpiece depicts the appearance of the Virgin Mary and her child to Saint Filippo Neri. It was painted between 1739-1740 and measures three metres (9.84 feet) high and over a metre and a half (4.92 feet) wide.
