Russia: Peshkov’s widow ready to meet Turkish authorities for apology
The widow of the pilot of Su-24, which was downed by Turkish air forces last November, said that she is ready to meet the head of Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow, following a ceremony in Lipetsk, Thursday.
In an interview with RT, widow Gelena Peshkova said: “The year has passed, and the Turkish authorities announced that they want to apologize for the death of Oleg. No matter how difficult it is for our family, we will come to this meeting, we will come to Moscow.”
In memory of her husband, Peshkova brought some of his personal belongings to the local aviation centre in Lipetsk, where a Su-34 bomber was also named after him.
The Sukhoi Su-24 jet was downed by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet for allegedly entering Turkish airspace on November 24 last year. Oleg Peshkov was killed in the incident and a marine, named Alexander Pozynich, was subsequently killed during an attempted rescue mission to locate the second pilot, after the helicopter he was flying in came under fire and was forced to crash land.
