France: Hundreds rally in support of police protest instigator

France, Paris
November 3, 2016 at 01:40 GMT +00:00 · Published

Several hundred police officers and their supporters gathered outside the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) in Paris on Thursday, to show their support for their colleague Guillaume Lebeau, who is facing disciplinary action for mobilising police officers.

Outside the IGPN protesters wore masks and held placards declaring their loyalty to Lebeau. Among the supporters was French boxer and former European champion Robert Paturel. He accused France of being a totalitarian state and called on the government “to listen to the police”, as their demands are reasonable.

Lebeau was reportedly one of the instigators of the police protests taking place all over France for more than two weeks, demanding independent trade unions and better working conditions.

After a six hour hearing Lebeau addressed the crowd, saying he was criticised for breaching police ethics. It has not been decided yet what the consequence for the police officer will be. According to Lebeau it could be anything from receiving a warning to being dismissed from the force.
