USA: Police fire on Dakota Pipeline protesters with teargas, rubber bullets

United States, Cannonball River
November 2, 2016 at 23:36 GMT -00:00 · Published

Police officers attempted to disperse protesters of the planned Dakota Access Pipeline as they gathered at the Cannonball River, on Wednesday, by firing rubber bullets and teargas at them. The pipeline is being built near the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's land; the Native American tribe and their supporters have come out in their hundreds to protest the planned construction.

Over the course of months of demonstration, hundreds of people have been arrested by the police, including journalists reporting on the issue.

The local Morton County Police Commission has been struggling to contain the protests with the resources that they have at their disposal. On Tuesday, North Dakotan authorities agreed to borrow an additional $4 million (€3.6 million) for policing the ongoing protests.

Morton County Commission Chairman Cody Schulz criticised US President Barack Obama’s recent comments that the anti-Pipeline protests should be left to “play out”, instead of providing federal funding for the police operation.

Schulz said, "Rather than creating further uncertainty, the President should be sending us the support and resources necessary to enforce the law and protect people's right to peacefully protest. Given the recent escalation of violence by protesters, letting the situation ‘play out’ is quite literally putting lives in danger."

The Texan natural gas company Energy Transfer Partners is attempting to construct a pipeline that would carry over 450,000 barrels of oil a day from North Dakota, through South Dakota and Iowa, before arriving at an oil refinery near Chicago.
